Discover the power of our unique combination: grass paired with legumes for unparalleled soil-building synergy. Our specially bred Black oats from Germany are designed to maximize biomass, ideal for winter feed for horses and for building your soil. With their exceptional growth and high BRIX levels, oats excel in sequestering vital minerals like calcium and phosphate, enriching compost and fostering soil health.

Harnessing the potential of oats and peas together, our mix offers dual benefits as a carbon crop or mulch for subsequent plantings. Easy to manage and encouraging natural mulching post-flowering, this blend ensures optimal soil health and nutrient retention. To get the best results, either as a carbon crop for compost making or to lie them down as a mulch wait until they are at least at 10% flowering before harvesting or flattening.

Elevate your gardening game with our premium oat and pea blend!

Description: This is a classic combination: grass with legumes, creating soil-building synergy. In this case, the oats are very special oats. These Black oats were developed in Germany to grow maximum biomass to feed horses over winter. They grow much larger tops than other oats and thrive when grown with legumes. Oats typically have the highest BRIX levels among the plants in our gardens. They possess a wonderful ability to sequester calcium and phosphate into their bodies, which then enriches our compost and aids in soil building. We love oats because calcium and phosphate are two minerals we need the most.

We need to be growing as much carbon as possible in our carbon crops. In the case of oats, they can also be encouraged to lie down very easily after flowering to become a mulch for the next crop. Peas grow well with oats as they are legumes and also lie down easily. Thus, this mix can be utilized either as a carbon crop or as a mulch for the following crop. To get the best results, either as a carbon crop for compost making or to lie them down as a mulch wait until they are at least at 10% flowering before harvesting or flattening.

Planting Instructions: Plant early Spring or early Autumn for best results.

  1. Measure out the amount of both seeds needed for the planting area; for example, if planting 10 sq m, take 1/4 of the peas and 1/4 of the oats, keeping them separate.
  2. Prepare the bed for planting.
  3. Evenly scatter the peas over the entire area, then do the same with the oats.
  4. Use a rake to chop the seeds into the soil (techniques available in our online workshop “Bed Prep and Planting”).
  5. Water the bed thoroughly.
  6. Cover the bed with a 70% shade cloth until the tips of the seedlings emerge.
  7. Carefully remove the shade cloth and replace it for a few more days until seedlings are past the stage where birds pose a threat.
  8. Optionally, use bird netting instead of shade cloth, which gives faster germination but may need to be removed before birds damage crops.
  9. Decide whether to remove the crop remnants for compost or cut them down to become mulch in the spring.
  10. If cutting down the remnants for mulch, cover them with plastic to kill all plants before transplanting seedlings through the mulch.

Follow these steps to successfully plant your Black Oats and Maple Pea seeds to ensure healthy growth in your garden bed.
