Broadbean Red Seeded

GENUS: Vicia SPECIES: faba

Heritage Status: New Zealand
Bio-Region of Origin: Nelson
Number of Seeds: 20

Description: An outstanding variety that grows well all over New Zealand but came to our Collection from Bev Wilson of Richmond Nelson. The red seeds inside the green pods have exceptional taste even when raw, and stay red when cooked. The plants are healthy and grow to 1m.

Planting Instructions: Plant into seed trays and transplant into beds 40cm diagonal spacing. In the North Broad beans are best sown in late July or August. Best sown in late July or August further south, in Autumn if winters are not severe, or Spring in very cold areas. Broad beans planted on a bed of wilted comfrey will give increased yield, so long as they have available calcium critical for crop health. Spray with raw milk or compost tea if needed for Blackspot.
