Description
Pecans grow into large, majestic trees much like walnuts and need very free-draining soil to thrive. They also inhibit the growth of other plants beneath them, so it is best to give them plenty of space, such as in a paddock. Trees grown from seed usually start fruiting in 6 to 10 years, and several are needed for good pollination. Pecans need hot summers and a sheltered position, as their wood is brittle and prone to breakage in wind.
