About This Bundle
Start Your Forest Garden the Right Way
One of the most common questions from people beginning with fruit trees is simple: what do I plant around them? A fruit tree planted alone is working against the odds — relying on you for fertility, pest management, and moisture. A fruit tree planted within a guild has everything it needs: nutrients cycling up from deep in the soil, fungi supported by woody biomass, and beneficial insects keeping the system in balance.
This bundle takes the guesswork out of it. We’ve brought together plants across all the key roles a healthy guild needs, selected for the New Zealand climate and tested here at Kōanga over many years.
This bundle is designed to pair with your fruit trees, building a complete, living system around them. If you don’t yet have a tree, simply choose one to plant alongside this bundle and build your guild from the ground up.
Importantly, this isn’t just a one-off planting, it’s the foundation of a system you can grow and multiply over time.
What’s in the Bundle
Each bundle covers all the strata of a functional forest garden ecosystem — tall support species, shrub layer, herbaceous layer, and groundcover.
Nitrogen Fixers
Tree Medic · Tree Lupin · Ovens Wattle
Mineral Accumulators
Comfrey · Daikon · Fennel · Elderberry
Deep Biomass Producers
Japanese Forage Willow · Egyptian Willow · Poplar
Flowering Plants
Cardoon · Angelica · Fennel · Cape Gooseberry
Edibles from Year One
Raspberries · Currants · Sorrel · Jerusalem Artichoke · Goumi · and more
Also Included
Layout map · Step-by-step planting guide
The willows and poplar provide fast biomass to feed soil fungi — either chipped as mulch or laid directly under the tree. The legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen, steadily building fertility without external inputs.
How Many Bundles Do You Need?
- Each bundle supports up to three heavy-feeding trees
- For fastest, strongest results: one bundle per heavy-feeding tree
- Minimum: one bundle per three heavy feeders
Planting Guide
Your bundle arrives in winter — everything is timed to the season. Here is how to handle each plant type on arrival:
Cuttings
Willows, Poplar, Elderberry — plant immediately on arrival while dormant, in their correct positions as shown on your layout map. Winter is the right time; dormant cuttings establish best in cold soil.
Root Divisions
Comfrey, Sorrel, Jerusalem Artichoke — pot up on arrival and keep somewhere sheltered. Plant out in spring once actively growing and well rooted.
Seeds
Fennel, Daikon, Cardoon, Angelica — germinate in late winter or early spring as days begin to lengthen. Transplant once seedlings are strong, or direct sow in early spring.
Built to Multiply
Many of the plants in this bundle can be easily propagated, through cuttings, division, or seed saving.
This means one bundle doesn’t just establish a single guild, it gives you the plant material to expand.
- Take hardwood cuttings from willow, poplar, and elderberry
- Divide comfrey, sorrel, and artichoke as they establish
- Save seed from fennel, angelica, and other flowering plants
Over time, you can replicate this system across your land — building resilience and abundance without needing to continually buy in new plants.
Why This Matters
A fruit tree planted within a guild like this has everything it needs:
- Nutrients cycling up from deep in the soil
- Fungi supported by woody biomass
- Beneficial insects helping manage pests naturally
- Continuous flowering and fruiting for birds and biodiversity
- Steadily improving soil fertility without external inputs
Each bundle is designed as a learning unit. Follow the layout, observe how the plants interact through a full season, and begin to propagate and expand from what you have.
This is how forest gardens become truly self-sustaining, not just planted once, but grown outwards, year by year.
