Heritage Status: New Zealand
Bio-Region of Origin: Southland
Quantity: Approx 170 grams
Description: Gifted by Dawn Deaker to Henry Harrington and then to Koanga. These are unusual shallots which form seed heads above each shallot and also form lovely big hard shallots which keep well. Sometimes they do not flower and sometimes only some flower but most usually do! If you pick off the flower stalks the onions will be twice as big. Save the biggest for seed and eat the rest.
Planting Instructions: Do best in light soils with good drainage and need a sunny position. Enrich soil with well rotted manure, compost, lime and Nature’s Garden prior to planting. Plant bulb just below the soil from May to July at 17cm diagonal spacings. They benefit from a weed suppressant mulch.
