Description: Kay found this melon on a road side stall in Dargaville one day when going to Pouto to visit Logan Forrest and his fruit trees and old olives. It had been grown by a Mr Chapman. It must have been the last year anybody in this land grew a pie melon. Many of the Northland gardeners used to grow them, and I have struggle to understand why over the years however recently I discovered that they have very special pickling qualities and taste… loads of recipes on the internet. They are super vigorous growers and croppers far easier than watermelons.
Planting Instructions: Sow seeds into trays and prick out at 2.5 cm diagonal spacings, when first leaves appear, or plant into 10 cm pots. Transplant into rich free draining soil (under cloches if necessary) when plants have 2-4 true leaves at 50 cm diagonal spacing.
