Description

Heritage Status: New Zealand
Bio-Region of Origin: Northland
Quantity: 3 Pups

Description: A very distinctive taro, with very dark green leaves and browny purple stems, smaller in stature than the green one. Both the leaf and the tuber are edible and have been in the past the most important carbohydrate food for Pacific peoples in the warmer areas. Patches of this old taro can still be found in old drains and swampy areas of Northland and the Bay of Plenty.

Planting Instructions: Plant taro in a warm, preferably frost free, wet spot, even very wet, even in a drain that has year round water. The warmer and wetter the conditions, the faster they will grow. They do handle light frosts but will lose their leaves and grow again in the following Spring.
