Description: Broadly conical, deciduous. Vigorous growth and good form., and coppices well. Excellent source of ramial woodchip. Habitat beside rivers and will grow in very wet places. Tolerates salt winds better than the other alders. Good firewood crop to utilise wet ground. Timber durable under water. Height 20-25m. We keep ours coppiced to 8m in forest garden after first coppice at 3 years.
Planting Instructions: Seed grown in flats during winter will germinate in the spring if lightly covered with soil. The young plants can be pricked out and planted in pots to be planted out in permanent locations in summer. Plants can also be started in spring but should not be covered. They should be left to grow throughout the year and planted the following summer.
