Planting Instructions:

  1. Timing: Sow the seeds in Autumn to overwinter, or sow in Spring when Winter beds are emptied.
  2. Bed Preparation: Prepare your bed thoroughly, ensuring it is well-tilled and free of debris.
  3. Seed Division: Divide the seeds into portions appropriate for your bed size. Mix the seeds very well to ensure even distribution.
  4. Scatter Sowing: Scatter sow the seeds evenly over the entire area of the bed.
  5. Incorporation: Use a rake to lightly chop the seeds into the soil, ensuring good soil contact.
  6. Covering: Cover the seeded bed with 70% shade cloth until the seedlings begin to poke through the cloth.
  7. Monitoring Growth: Carefully lift the cloth and cover again for a few more days until the seedlings are well established.
  8. Final Steps: Remove the shade cloth from the bed and allow the plants to continue growing.

Follow these steps to successfully sow and establish your seeds, ensuring a healthy and thriving garden bed for the seasons ahead.

Alternatively you could sow seed into the comfrey patch in early Spring and cover until established.

  1. Timing: Sow the seeds into the comfrey patch in early Spring.
  2. Covering: Cover the seeded area with shade cloth until the seeds are established.
  3. Preparation: Prepare the comfrey patch by covering it with black plastic in August to kill all grass and weeds.
  4. Planting: Once the black plastic is removed and the patch is clear, plant the seeds and cover with shade cloth until established enough to prevent bird damage.
  5. Establishment: Monitor the growth of the seeds and ensure they are well established before removing the shade cloth.

If starting your comfrey bed from scratch:

  1. Bed Preparation: Prepare a new bed for planting by spacing Russian comfrey root cuttings at 40cm diagonal spacings.
  2. Seed Sowing: Scatter sow the seeds into the bed at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 sq. m.
  3. Incorporation: Use a rake to lightly chop the seeds into the soil.
  4. Covering: Cover the bed with shade cloth until everything is well established.

Follow these steps to successfully sow and establish your seeds in either the comfrey patch or a new bed, ensuring a thriving and productive garden.
