Planting Instructions:

  1. Timing: Plant in early Spring and Autumn for best results.
  2. Bed Preparation: Prepare a well-tilled bed or comfrey border for planting.
  3. Seeding Rate: Sow crimson clover seeds at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 10 sq. m in prepared beds or 1 tablespoon per 5 sq. m in comfrey borders.
  4. Seed Incorporation: Use a rake to chop the seeds into the soil in prepared beds, or scatter seeds evenly in comfrey borders.
  5. Covering: After planting, cover the seeded area with 70% shade cloth to protect the seeds and promote germination.
  6. Comfrey Border Option: Alternatively, sow seeds directly into a comfrey border. Cover the area with black plastic in August to eliminate grass and weeds, then sow seeds and cover with shade cloth until established.
  7. Comfrey Root Cuttings: If starting from scratch, prepare a bed and plant Russian comfrey root cuttings at 40cm diagonal spacings. Chop crimson clover seeds into the soil at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 sq. m, then cover the bed with shade cloth until seedlings emerge.
  8. Monitoring: Regularly check the planted areas and remove shade cloth once the crimson clover is well established.

Follow these steps to successfully plant crimson clover in either prepared beds or comfrey borders, and enjoy the benefits of this versatile and beneficial plant.
