Description: This ancient corn which was passed to Koanga in 2023 by a supporter came from the Maniapoto rohe and is reputedly an ancient red corn that has been in this land for a very long time. Accordingly to historians the original corn that came to this land included red corn and we think his is one of them. In this, and it was traditionally eaten at the milk stage as sweet corn, but it is not as sweet as modern day sweet corn. It was also fermented as kanga pirau, and often stored in barrels of pork fat, then skewered cooked over an open fire before eating. The dry kernels were boiled in ash water to soften and eat as well.
Planting Instructions: Scatter sow seeds into trays and transplant when 3.5cm high and soil temperatures reach 15-16 degrees C. Plant at 30cm apart in rows 50cm apart, deeply to cover leaves, and if necessary cover from birds.
