FAMILY: CUCURBITACEAE
GENUS: Lagenaria SPECIES: siceraria
Description
Heritage Status: New Zealand
Number of Seeds: 6
Description: These seeds were sent to Koanga by a supporter keen to ensure these seeds survived. They were described as a small gourd that was dried then commonly carved to make them into a nose flute. They are in the Curcurbita pepo genus and species, so cross easily with other members of this species, so be careful. Our feeling is that they are crossed to some extent, before we received the seed) so careful selection and possibly hand pollination will be imprtant. They have all dried well this year with hard skins, so it looks as though they will all make nose flute gourds, but we have not made any yet. The vines look similar to a cucumber plant with many small fruit.
Planting Instructions: Sow seed into tray after danger of frost. Prick out at 6 cm diagonal spacings when first leaves appear. Transplant into garden at 1m diagonal spacings once leaves touch in the tray and soil temp reaches 15-16 degrees C.
