We’re inviting passionate people to volunteer with us here at Koanga in our forest gardens every Friday morning. This is a chance to dive into hands-on work in a thriving ecosystem, learning the seasonal rhythms of nature while contributing to sustainable land care.

We’re looking for reliable folks who can join us regularly. The longer you stay, the more you’ll gain — sticking around to experience all the seasons is especially valuable, as it takes time to see the forest cycles unfold and to build your skills.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Immersion in a forest garden environment—think planting, chop n drop, chipping, of and observing seasonal changes.
  • Learning from experienced team members about regenerative ag, heritage plants, and ecological resilience at the Home of New Zealand’s Largest Heritage Seed Bank & Food Plant Collection.
  • Being part of and supporting a charitable trust dedicated to regenerative agriculture and sustainable food systems in New Zealand.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Reliability and enthusiasm for regular, long-term volunteering.
  • A willingness to get your hands dirty and work outdoors in all weather.
  • An interest in growing your knowledge of Forest Gardens and Regenerative Agriculture over time.

  • When: Every Friday morning (9 AM to 12 PM) and then join us for a shared lunch
  • Where: Koanga Institute, near Wairoa, Hawkes Bay
  • Bonus: Volunteers may get to take home seasonal produce or plants when available!
